A Halcyone Maker field guide
Choose a background for your character video
The right background depends on where your clip goes next. Start with a short test in the app you plan to use. A transparent WebM is useful only when that app preserves its alpha channel.
Choose the output for your project
Use transparent PNG for a still character in a slide, thumbnail or layout. Use WebM for moving gestures and changing expressions; Plus can include your voice in the same clip. GIF is silent and is better suited to short loops.
GLB serves a different purpose: it contains a 3D model and body animations, with a static facial expression. It does not reproduce your recorded voice-driven face performance. Use a recorded WebM when you need that finished performance.
Transparent WebM: for an editor that supports alpha
In Animate → Record, choose the video shape first. Open Animate → Background and select Transparent, then return to Record and choose WebM video. Check the crop guide while the character moves and record a short test.
Import the downloaded clip and put a colored layer beneath it. If the character has clean edges and the layer shows around it, your workflow is preserving transparency. Black around the character in a player can indicate unsupported alpha display; it does not by itself prove the export lost transparency.
- Check around the hands, ears and hair while the character moves.
- Confirm the voice plays if you made a voiced export.
- Inspect the final export from your editor, as well as its preview.
Greenback: for a chroma-key workflow
If your destination cannot read WebM alpha but supports chroma key, record with Greenback. Import the clip, select that green as the key color and adjust the edge settings in the destination app.
Avoid green clothing, green eyes and other green parts that the key might remove. Check fine edges and moving hands against the background you will actually use. A greenback is a fallback workflow, not a guarantee of clean edges in every app.
Solid: when the clip can keep its own background
Choose White, Black or Solid when the character can live on a colored panel or fill the screen. This avoids needing transparency in the destination editor. Match the background to your slides or leave space around the character for captions.
A solid background does not change the file format: video output is still WebM. Test whether your editor accepts it, and use a compatible editor or converter if your destination requires MP4.
Check the handoff before making the whole video
Export a short silent clip first to check framing and background support. Your first basic export needs no account; a free account makes basic exports unlimited. Preview an audio file free for 20 seconds when you want to check the voice, and use Plus or Pro for the voiced export.
Once the test works, save the character and studio setup. Repeat the same background and framing for the next take. The destination editor still handles slide composition, captions, cuts and final delivery.
- The destination app can import the WebM file.
- The chosen background looks right over your actual scene.
- The whole gesture fits the frame.
- Your final rendered file plays with the expected sound and background.
